Materials Manager

Location: Multimatic Ride Dynamics, Newmarket, Ontario, Canada

Position Overview:

Multimatic Ride Dynamics (MRD) is one of the newest of Multimatic’s North American divisions. Multimatic Ride Dynamics is looking for a Materials Manager who will be responsible for coordinating the activities of the materials function to ensure that the needs of the customer are met. Train and develop the materials team to meet the present and future needs of the business.

Plant Location: Multimatic Ride Dynamics - 1100 Stackhouse Road, Newmarket, ON, L3Y 8E4, Canadaa

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establish and monitor overall procedures, methods, projects, policies, and programs designed to improve MRP control efficiency and company profitability.
  • Follow up on correspondences with customers and suppliers either verbally and/or in writing as required.
  • Aid in the sourcing of all materials, components, outside processes, and contracts.
  • Constantly monitor industry pricing and product cost in order to maintain the best possible overall profitability for the company.
  • Stay informed on the latest changes to customs procedures and inform other departments and employees, especially in regards to CUSMA and the Automotive Trade Agreement.
  • In the event of receiving a customer concern, issue a customer/concern report and include the production manager and quality manager in distribution.
  • Advise other department managers of any potential problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure compliance to all health and safety rules and housekeeping principals. Ensure substandard conditions and practices identified in plant safety audits are corrected.
  • Prepare reports and key measureable indicators each month. Carry out corrective actions if necessary and report information out in a monthly management review meeting.
  • Attend management report out meeting on a weekly basis.
  • Complete layered process audits as required.
  • Conduct department meetings on a monthly basis.
  • Provide oversight and direction and delegate responsibilities to all members in the department. 
  • Manage performance: communicate job expectations and conduct employee evaluations for all department members on an end of probation basis and an annual basis.
  • Coach, counsel, and discipline employees with the assistance of Human Resources as necessary.
  • Work with Human Resources to interview and select candidates to fill vacancies within the department.
  • Oversee onboarding and ensure orientations, including on the job training, are completed for new hires.
  • Determine employee development and/or training needs for department members on an annual basis. Prepare annual training plan and submit to the Human Resources Department.
  • Prepare departmental budget on an annual basis.
  • Participate in succession planning activities including career development.
  • Follow departmental and general procedures where applicable.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the General Manager or Assistant General Manager.
  • Abide by all company safety rules, responsibilities, policies, and procedures including the legislative requirements of the OHSA.
  • Work in compliance with ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 standards.
  • Adopt, practice, and promote Kaizen principles; participate in Kaizen and GEAR activities. Encourage continuous improvement efforts within the department and ensure submission of individual and team GEARs to achieve one hundred percent participation.

Education and Experience:

  • Completion of a college diploma or university degree.
  • A professional designation in either materials or purchasing (i.e. CPP).
  • Seven to ten years of materials or purchasing experience in automotive manufacturing or a manufacturing environment that may be similar to the automotive industry.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in a supervisory/management role.
  • Excellent knowledge of purchasing and MRP systems.
  • Good knowledge of government legislation in the areas of Health and Safety (i.e. OHSA, WHMIS), Employment Standards, Human Rights, Pay Equity, WSIB, etc.
  • Excellent problem solving, interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to coach, counsel, discipline, and motivate.
  • Supervisory skills in the area of employee development, health and safety, hiring, orientation, and performance reviews.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
