Health and Safety Specialist

Location: FORMULA SAE NORTH, Multimatic Product Services, Bangkok, Multimatic Anton Manufacturing, Concord, Ontario, Canada

POSITION SUMMARY:         

The Health & Safety Specialist oversees Division safety policies to ensure that the Division meets regulatory safety requirements. Organizes, develops, plans, implements and maintains safety strategies, objectives, programs, and policies for Division based on new and existing regulations as well as sound safety methodology. Participates in ongoing development, communication, and implementation of new programs and policies. Develops and delivers necessary safety and environmental training for Division. Leads, manages, and monitors Division’s Joint Health & Safety Committee and Ergonomics programs. Responds to safety-related issues and concerns raised by employees or management and creates plans to amend violations/hazards. Conducts industrial hygiene monitoring and accident investigations. Serves as primary liaison for governmental regulators/agencies. Performs other duties and provides work direction to other staff as necessary.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leads the development of long and short-term health and safety strategies and objectives to meet future needs and growth opportunities of Divisions. Develops and maintains health and safety programs, procedures, and policies based on new and existing regulations as well as sound safety methodology. Participates in ongoing development, communication, and implementation of new programs and policies.

  1. Develops, reviews, and manages departmental budget and expenses for materials, equipment, travel, etc., ensuring conformity to financial plan.
  2. Develops and delivers necessary safety training for Division in accord with established law, regulation, or policies, practices, and programs.
  3. Ensures adherence to established quality, safety, and housekeeping standards.
  4. Seeks out and corrects unsafe acts and hazardous conditions, ensuring all safety and non-safety plant rules and regulations are followed.
  5. Provides feedback to all levels of Management on Safety KPIs.
  6. Conducts industrial hygiene monitoring and reports results accordingly.
  7. Follows and implements duties including those specified under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  8. Serves as primary contact with, and liaison to, governmental and regulatory agencies, 3rd party ISO 14001 audit firms.
  9. Reviews and adheres to all health and safety, environmental, and quality standards, policies, and procedures.
  10. Liaison with Ministry of Labour (MOL), OHSA, WSIB, and Ministry of Environment (MOE) personnel.
  11. Responsible for managing workers compensation case management and member of return to work program (WSIB).
  12. Leads, manages, and/or monitors activities of Division’s Health & Safety Committees. Acts as primary designate to respond to safety-related issues and concerns raised by employees or management and creates plans to emend violations/hazards.
  13. Responds immediately to items brought to his/her attention with respect to hazards, defects, incidents, or non-compliance issues.
  14. Performs all work in compliance with the Divisions Health and Safety policies and procedures as well as all Country and local laws; promptly report any hazardous condition or workplace injury.
  15. Reviews all accident/incident reports and recommends corrective actions
  16. Adopt Kaizen principles and concepts, participate in GEAR activities, and model behaviors that cultivate safe working conditions, quality, customer value, performance, and integrity.
  17. Follow all general, department, and position procedures that are applicable to this role as indicated in the level III procedure manual.
  18. Adhere to and work in compliance with legislative requirements of IATF16949 and ISO14001 standards.
  19. Performs other reasonable duties as directed

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or a related field, or demonstrated experience.
  • CRSP or equivalent professional designation is preferred.
  • 5 years of professional experience in a manufacturing or related environment.
  • 2 years of health and safety program management experience in a highly automated, 3 shift production operation desired
  • Demonstrated success designing and implementing a robust ergonomics program
  • Proficient with Microsoft suite of programs
  • Experience with WSIB
