Chief Engineer – Mechatronics

MTC provides advanced design, simulation, testing and prototyping services to Multimatic’s production divisions and to automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), niche vehicle manufacturers, motorsports organizations, military equipment contractors and consumer product companies.

MTC houses key engineering, fabrication, testing and development capabilities under one roof, enabling rapid turnaround and tight integration between its departments, which include: vehicle systems engineering, product engineering, predictive methods; mechatronics, product testing and validation; composites, fabrication and prototyping.

Position Overview:

MTC is seeking to recruit a Chief Engineer – Mechatronics to provide engineering direction/oversight on development of innovative automotive mechatronic devices such as powered closure systems, adaptive/active damping systems and powered aerodynamic devices.

Key Responsibilities:

General and Task Management

  • Communicate with senior management on program status, risks and issues in an appropriate and timely manner
  • Support and drive development of transitional technologies and navigate those technologies through the “grey zone” between pure engineering activity and extension business at the Industrial Group
  • Identify areas of technological advancement and support the development of product strategies that leverage these advancements
  • Guide technical personnel to develop solutions that solve customers’ problems in an organized and timely manner
  • Assess cost/benefit trade-off of key technical solutions in conjunction with the Industrial Groups, and lead the technical decision-making process
  • Facilitate the definition of technical resource requirements for successful project execution, including allocation of existing resources and identification of necessary additional resources
  • Support the identification and deployment of technical skill sets, adequate allocation of resource levels and systems to deliver project goals
  • Develop and continually monitor the standardization of the engineering approach at all Multimatic Engineering locations
  • Collaborate with departmental managers to monitor the completion of tasks and ensure good performance and record keeping
  • Lead the assembly of material for technical reviews as required
  • Ensure technical reviews are focused on competing requirements conflict resolution and direction setting
  • Support the engineering and sales teams in the preparation of project engineering cost, time estimates and the review, development and approval of customer engineering SORs and contracts
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolve problems as required
  • Identify business improvement opportunities within the organization
  • Support continuous training and development
  • Support and adhere to policies, procedures, and operational guidelines related to established quality management systems (IATF 16949)
  • Adhere to safety practices, policies and procedures as outlined by legislation in the respective locations of work
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned

Technical Management

  • Lead the development of electrical/electronic/mechatronic systems to meet the expectations and requirements of customers including but not limited to:
    • Power modules for high current vehicle applications
    • ECUs for vehicle hardware control
    • Gateway modules for OEM vehicle bus interface
    • Development of control modules for in-house hardware applications
    • Diagnosis and repair of existing electrical/electronic/mechatronic systems
    • Development of Multimatic engineering tools for electronic components
  • Ensure the establishment, concurrence, documentation and maintenance of requirements and specifications for all projects
  • Ensure the development of project plans including timing, deliverable and resource allocations
  • Facilitate the development of software solutions to satisfy project requirements
  • Facilitate the design and build of prototype boards, panels, bucks for test and development
  • Ensure the development and use strategies for version control, requirements & change tracking
  • Facilitate the development of test procedures and test equipment for electronic components
  • Facilitate the verification, validation and testing of developed software solutions
  • Work closely with other disciplines such as outside suppliers and mechanical engineers to achieve the requirements set for the projects
  • Stay up to date on the latest electronic chip technology, programming techniques, manufacturing techniques and general industry trends

Relationship Management

  • Ensure effective communication between Engineering’s global staff is maintained
  • Draw on Engineering’s global organization to achieve optimal technical performance
  • Develop and maintain client network and relationships with senior level of OEM customer counterparts
  • Support the sales and business development teams by adding expertise to proposals and presentations
  • Work as part of the Management team to share ideas and improve operation, recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities

People Management

  • Consistently promote high standards through personal example, so that each member of the team understands the standards and behaviors expected of them
  • Motivate and coach the team to operational success
  • Promote technology transfer and skills development between the core product engineering and sales acquisition engineering teams / activities

Required Qualifications:

  • University degree in Electrical/Electronics, Mechatronics, Measurement and Control or Computing engineering with a minimum of ten years’ experience in automotive-related prototyping and production development
  • Understanding of automotive and industrial control and electro-mechanical systems, data acquisition techniques/equipment, including associated transducers and instrumentation
  • Good knowledge of control systems for pneumatics, hydraulics systems
  • Knowledge of electronic system testing procedures and tools
  • Knowledge of the overall automotive and related electronics industries
  • Exposure to vehicle telematics and infotainment

Desired Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-years experience in a similar or related leadership position within the automotive industry
  • Understanding of computer-aided design and analysis tools
    • MathWorks’s Matlab, Simulink, Stateflow and associated tool sets
    • Vector Tools
  • Experience with embedded system programming using such tools as:
    • Visual Studio.Net, SciLab
    • C++ programing including MISRA Coding Standards, Embedded C
  • Understanding of power electronics, DC and AC motors, motor controllers, power conversion, power storage, signal conditioning and digital communication
  • Experience in development to ISO 26262 including a good understanding of the ASIL risk classification scheme
  • Experience with AUTOSAR
  • Exposure to Software system Life Cycle Management tools such as P-SPICE, A-SPICE, CMMI, UGS
  • Familiarity with PCB design tools such as the Altium suite of tools
  • Exposure to ISO 14229 Road vehicles -- Unified diagnostic services tools and disciplines
  • Experience with CAN, LIN, SPI, SENT and SSI communication protocols including network modelling
  • Ability to manage and troubleshoot electrical/electronic projects
  • Understanding of state-of-the-art micro controllers such as PPC and MPC platforms ARM Core or TI DSP
