Mechanical / Tooling Engineer

SUMMARY

Increase Company profitability by providing well designed equipment, tools and fixtures for future programs and current production tools and support the quotation process.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES         

  • Provide input and direction in the sourcing, design, construction, PPAP and Launch of new tools, fixtures and equipment for future programs and current changes
  • Assist Tool-Room personnel and/or vendors in solving problems arising from production processes, tool tryouts and launching of new programs
  • Estimate, schedule and execute all engineering changes of tooling, cost savings, etc... Co-ordinate these changes with Program Management, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance departments to ensure timely try-out and phase in periods to meet production schedule requirements or customers delivery dates
  • Provide technical support for product development and design
  • Perform hands-on weld fixture adjustments within geometric tolerances
  • Use technology on new and current processes and tools to meet or exceed customer specifications
  • Perform other duties as determined by the Engineering Manager and/or General Manger (AGM included)
  • Stay informed of latest technologies with respect to tooling. Report on and implement those ideas, which will be of benefit to IMD
  • Establish new and superior sourcing methods for new tooling, which will ensure capability and improve, cost effectiveness of tools for the program (prototype and/or production). Assist Program Managers to prepare internal quotes for new/existing programs and all engineering changes by issuing, coordinating and proposing tooling and gauge suppliers
  • Work with production to implement Poka Yoke methods
  • Work with Quality Engineer and others to establish characteristics and achievable tolerances for SPC
  • Work in compliance with IATF Standard
  • Will work in compliance with all legislative requirements of the OHSA and will be accountable for specific Health and Safety responsibilities, as outlined under “Safety and Environmental Responsibilities, Office and Productions Employees
  • Once aware of a product or process non-conformance, stop further processing and inform area supervisor or manager responsible
  • Maintains due diligence in regards to environmental matters, minimize any potentially harmful accidents and work in compliance with ISO 14001. Will follow the environmental guidelines

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Prefer experience as a tool and die maker
  • Two years of experience as a tool room supervisor
  • Five years previous experience as a Tooling Engineer
  • Prefer Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to interact with all levels of employees in the organization, customers, suppliers, sub-contractors, engineers, etc.
  • Negotiation skills
  • Excellent knowledge of the assembly department and press department equipment
  • Computer skills in the area of spreadsheets, word processing, CAD (Solidworks), design and data bases
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Travel as required

The associate may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and may occasionally be required to perform repetitive work tasks.

The associate may need to be available during off hours if needed and assist in emergency situations.  The associate must have the flexibility to work various shift hours and/or extended hours if needed

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the associate frequently works near moving parts. 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
